~Retro Era~ (1996-1998)
The Retro Era is characterized by its primitive look and the fact that you can't see boss health gauges.
The retro Touhou games are played on the PC-98 system, so you need an emulator
for these games. The folder comes with not only the emulator itself
(Anex), but also a font file you can use for the English-translated
titles (which you can tell the emulator to use in the Font tab of its
options menu); do note that most of this era remains untranslated save for Th02 and what little text there is in Th01.
The
games of the Retro Era do not have unique gameplay mechanics; that
trend started with the Classic Era. Thus, there are no special gameplay
mechanics sections.

Mirrors
* Mirror ( Depositfiles) [Ace of Hearts]
Plot Point:
The strength of the seal that keeps demons and other evil creatures
from entering Gensokyo via the shrine - which also serves as an entrance
to the outside world you and I are familiar with - has been
diminishing. Reimu decides to go in of her own volition to see whether
the cause lies in there and needs beaten up (it does).
Special Notes:
The screen doesn't scroll and it's actually built more like a breakout
game (think "Arkanoid"), featuring a large yin-yang ball Reimu hits
around the screen with her gohei, and that ball is the only thing that
can damage enemies.
